Discover the Story Behind From Whence They Came
This video introduces the remarkable journey of the Glover, Ragsdale, and Stewart families across thirteen generations and five centuries—from Tudor England and Beaujeu in France to colonial Virginia, French Louisiana, and the Oklahoma Territory.
Viewers will discover how oral histories, census records, land deeds, court documents, and family memories reveal a powerful story of enslavement and freedom, migration, identity, land, loss, endurance, and inheritance. Above all, the video demonstrates that history lives not only in textbooks, but also in the stories families preserve.
An Earlier Work: A Gentle Giant: Myrtle Stewart’s Poetry & Memoirs
Dr. Wilton R. Stewart and his sister, Marquetta R. Stewart-Brown, J.D., co-authored and edited A Gentle Giant: Myrtle Stewart’s Poetry & Memoirs to help preserve their family history. Published in 2021, the book presents the poetry, prose, and memories of their mother, W. Myrtle Stewart, whose ninety-nine-year journey began on a family farm in Longview, Texas. Her story reflects her mother’s death in childbirth, life with a single father, racial discrimination, educational inequality, World War II, family, perseverance, and achievement.
